Two traffic cops were taken to the hospital following an early morning accident in front of SOPAC along the Iliili Airport road.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety Terry Letuli, a vehicle was entering the highway from the road behind the Veterans Memorial Stadium, while the two motorcycle cops were rushing to an accident on the west side. The vehicle with a female driver struck the two motorcycles and the two cops were ejected from their motorcycles.

Letuli said, the woman driver was apparently not aware that other vehicles on the road were giving way to the cops and drove onto the highway, instead of stopping.

The two cops were taken to the hospital and at the time Letuli spoke with KHJ News around 10:30 am, it was known that one of the officers suffered a broken leg and other injuries. No information was available at the time about the injuries of the second officer, who was to undergo a cat scan.

The motorcycles appeared to have suffered extensive damages.

The Deputy Commissioner said, initial information from the hospital is that the two cops would be admitted and the one with the broken leg may require surgery.  They were both in stable but serious condition.

Traffic in both directions came to a halt for about 40 minutes while crews worked to clear the wreckage.

Information received by KHJ News is that one of the cops has been involved in at least three previous motorcycle accidents.
