A more than an hour-long power outage on Saturday night disrupted social events, bingo games, and put a large area of the Western District in darkness.

Executive Director of the American Samoa Power Authority, Wallon Young, says the outage was caused by one of 12 power distribution feeders on Tutuila, Feeder 6, tripping. This was traced to a cable joint failure, near Lote’s Autoshop on the Airport Road.

The outage affected customers from the Tafuna Power Plant to the Airport Road/Route-1 Intersection, Malaeimi, Mesepa, Falenui, Pavaiai, Aoloau and Canco Hill.

Young explained that the loads, which Feeder 6 normally carries, had to be transferred to other feeders before line crews began replacing the failed cable joint.

The outage lasted 84 minutes.
