A school building at Tafuna High School which hasn’t been used since it was completed more than 2 years ago, is still unoccupied.

The status of the building was covered in a hearing of the House Education Committee last week, at which Acting Director Theresa Atuatasi, Deputy Director Faafetai Teofilo and Grants Manager Faugagana Fagaava, were questioned for more than an hour about funding, unfinished school buildings, buses, teachers, roads and other issues pertaining to education.

The building, constructed by Nana’s Company, showed cracks and the Department of Education (DOE) made the decision not to use it. Even though Public Works said that there was nothing wrong with the structure of he building.

An independent contractor whom assessed the building, however, recommend that it not be used.

At the hearing last week, DOE’s Deputy Director Teofilo said that they have come to an arrangement with the contractor and the building should be ready for occupancy when the new school year begins in September.

The Tafuna building was built with Capital Improvement Project funds allocated by the Department of Interior, which had a hand in getting an independent assessment of the building.
