Bamboo guns, driving under the influence, speeding and alcohol fueled public peace disturbances kept police busy over the Christmas holiday.

Between Friday and last night, more than 20 arrests were made, resulting in a busy District Court calendar today.

The Department of Public Safety holiday enforcement, which included roadblocks, nabbed Driving Under the Influence offenders and speeding drivers. Traffic stops also led to the discovery of drugs in vehicles.

But at the central police station in Fagatogo, it was neighbors calls about bamboo guns that had police responding to various parts of the island.

A senior officer told KHJ News that they confiscated many bamboo guns and counseled parents and their children about the dangers of the devices.

“I blame the parents. They should not allow their children to use the bamboo guns,” stated the officer. He said, some neighbors reported that the loud explosions from bamboo guns were continuing close to 2am.

There were no injuries reported, but DPS now has a collection of bamboo guns of various makes and sizes. Thankfully, there were no deaths or injuries from the Christmas holiday and DPS is praying that this will be the same outcome for the New Year weekend.

DPS’ holiday enforcement ends on Jan. 1st.
