
The value of having good teachers who push students in difficult and challenging subjects was underscored by one of the territory’s successful scientists, Dr. Andrew Pati Ah Young Chapon.

Speaking to students of the American Samoa Community College and faculty yesterday, the Tafuna High School and UCLA graduate talked about how his high school science teacher helped spur his interest in science.
His science project on mosquitoes was one of the first from the territory to win accolades, nationally.

Pati and his partner Dr. Maxime Ah Young Chapon, talked about opportunities in biomedical sciences and what students have to do to set themselves apart from the rest.
At a start up company, Dren Bio, Pati leads a group of scientists who are developing novel therapies that stimulate the immune system to eliminate cancer.
Dr. Maxime Ah Young Chapon works for Alector company, where he is tasked with validating candidate targets and developing new drugs to slow down or prevent neurodegeneration.
