The Governor has extended, by another 30 days, his order declaring a state of disaster emergency related to the earthquakes in Manu’a.
This authorizes the Governor to direct and compel the evacuation of all or part of the population from a stricken or threatened area, prescribe routes and modes of transportation for evacuation, and provide for emergency housing.
Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey has downgraded the alert level for the shakes in Ta’u, Manu’a, as tremors continue to drop.
The agency said, over the past few weeks, that the earthquake activity level for Taʻu Island had dramatically decreased and maintained low levels.
As a result, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, which oversees volcano activities in American Samoa, is lowering the volcano alert level to normal and the aviation color code to green.
The Governor’s order to extend the disaster declaration advises anyone who feels a strong or long earthquake, observes a sudden drop or rise of sea level, or hears a loud roar from the ocean to immediately go to higher ground.
