
A post mortem of yesterday’s emergency drill on the evacuation plan for Manu’a would determine the strong and weak points of the exercise.
The scenario as explained by officials at the Emergency Operations Center, was a volcanic eruption was to happen three hours after the first notice was given. 
Samoa Airways diverted from its busy inter-Samoa route to fly from Faleolo Airport directly to Ofu Airport to evacuate residents to Tutuila. Then the plane flew to Fitiuta to pick up residents there and return to Tafuna.
When KHJ News stopped by the EOC yesterday morning, it looked like a NASA control center during a space shuttle take off.
There were more than 30 people from various agencies, stationed at computers facing huge screens. Dr Downs from the US Geological Survey team was also present along with representatives from NOAA and the US Army Reserve.
Reports from Manu’a indicate that at first residents were unsure of the exercise but as they learned what the scenario was, they got into action and followed directions.
All those involved were to have a debriefing and conduct an autopsy of how the exercise went.
