
Flags flew at half staff today from 6 am to 5pm as a mark of respect for Lealao Soloatoa Melila Purcell Jr.,
Lealao passed away on June 12, in Honolulu at the age of 70.
Governor Lemanu said HTC Lealao’s love for his Territory is highlighted throughout his many years of public and military service. He has made commendable contributions to American Samoa’s long history with the United States Military — his 20 years of service in the United States Army Reserve and combat tour in Iraq are a testament of his selfless service and love for our country and countrymen.
He also served as the Director of Agriculture from 2012 until 2016.
Lealao was part of the management team at StarKist Samoa, where he was community Relations Manager for many years.
He was active in the early years of the American Samoa National Olympic Committee and a founder of the Samoa Bowl.
The Governor stated, “As we reflect on the life of HTC Lealao Soloatoa Melila Purcell Jr. and his service to our Territory and Nation, let us take a moment to be grateful for all the great leaders who have helped preserve the tenets and ideals of our democracy.”
