Close to 500 students are attending the Department of Education’s Credit Recovery Program, which is now in its second week at Samoana High School.
Students from grades 9-12, who were unable to complete their credits during the last school year, have been given a chance to obtain make up credits during the 6-week program.
Matau’a Aasa-Matai stated that since classes started last week, attendance has been high.
She feels, that virtual learning in the past school year was a key factor in the high number of students who didn’t fulfill their credits.
Teacher Tamali’ileupuia Tela told KHJ News, “Virtual learning played a very big part in the high number of students not being able to complete their credits.”
And she foresees that, if virtual learning continues in the new school year, the number of students needing credit recovery will be even higher.
“Students need to be in class so we can monitor them,” said Tela. “Face to face interaction is very important, and it’s a way that we can make sure our students get their work done.”
