Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata reacted to today’s historic ruling by the US Supreme Court overturning the 50-year-old landmark Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion.
KHJ News Washington DC correspondent Matt Kaye reports…
Congresswoman Amata, herself pro-life, called the High Court ruling that now leaves abortion up to the states and territories, “momentous.”
American Samoa prohibits abortion with limited exceptions and has no abortion providers or facilities.
“To me,” Amata says, “this outcome reinforces both a need to protect the lives of the innocent and helpless, and a requirement for great compassion, action and assistance for young mothers in need.”
Amata, a mother three-times, says in her written statement, “God calls us to compassion and protection of the vulnerable and needy, and the lives of babies and mothers are precious…made by God.”
But the Congresswoman acknowledges the nation is “severely divided” on abortion…and calls on Americans to do all they can “to bridge divides…not worsen them,” to talk to each other “in kindness.”
“We can…do better,” Amata argues, with a role for people, government, churches, and charities.
She says, crisis pregnancy centers “admirably” take on this “godly work,” but need lots of help. Programs like WIC are important.
But Amata quickly adds, “not least, the responsibilities of fathers must be emphasized and encouraged.”
Amid the political and social turmoil already roiling the nation after the Supreme Court ruling, Uifa’atali Amata concludes, “we should trust God in times of change, recognizing that the hearts of judges and all leaders are ‘in the hand of the Lord.’
