No DPS roadblocks but cops on the prowl

The Department of Public Safety is not planning a special enforcement for graduation season but Deputy Commissioner Terry Letuli forewarns that police will be on the look out for inebriated drivers.

In the past, DPS has held rolling roadblocks during graduation time and checking on underage drinkers.

Letuli said, they are currently doing a seat belt enforcement and police will be checking on drivers under the influence, minors consuming alcohol, and other infractions.

DPS has been operating two 12-hour shifts per day, from the time the first community case of COVID was reported on February 21st.

Letuli says that this is continuing and he cannot pinpoint a time when they can return to three, 8-hour shifts.

During the COVID surge, many police officers contracted COVID. This placed a strain on the already understaffed police force.

Asked about the enforcement of COVID rules, Letuli said that the citations were issued mainly to people who broke the nightly curfew. He said, it was hard to enforce the rules for quarantine.
