Another presentation of food and beverage donations for the LBJ Hospital and EMS by the University of Hawaii College of education Cohort 35 was held last Friday.
May Iosefo of the UH Cohort 35 explained that this service project came about when a letter was posted on March 24, 2022 by then Acting Chief of Staff, Dr. Akapusi Ledua, to the American Samoa community for help.
“Dr. Ledua’s letter was a call for help to the community for donations by way of refreshments for the LBJ and EMS staff who work into the late hours of the night when stores were closed due to Code Red restrictions. Cohort 35 decided to rise to the call by providing bi-weekly donations of snacks and beverages for the LBJTMC staff,” says a press release from the class.
Last Friday was the 9th week of the bi-weekly donations by Cohort-35.
“We just want to show our appreciation for the sacrifices that are made [by LBJ and EMS staff to serve our community.” said Ms. Iosefo. “It is not much, but just a small token that we hope will convey our appreciation of all the work, sacrifice, and risks you deal with every day as you work with patients. Thank you for the quality care you provide for the people of American Samoa.”
Dr. Abraham Le’iato, Acting Chief of Staff of LBJ accepted the donation on behalf of CEO Moefaauo William Emmsley. He also presented a certificate of appreciation to the University of Hawaii Manoa College of Education Cohort-35 for its continuous support for the medical personnel.
“This certificate of appreciation is just a small token, but it carries all the hearts of the medical staff in it.” said Dr. Le’iato. “Our job is not easy. It is very challenging, but it makes our job easier and so much better knowing that we have the kind support of our community. Thank you so much and God bless you all.”
All of the donations for the community service project were provided out of pocket by the 17
members of the UH Cohort 35, Coordinator/Instructor Mene Taua’a, and Teacher Assistant Taimane Luafutu.
