DPS still looking for alternate site for TCF

The search is still on for an “alternate location” to build a new Territorial Correctional Facility.

Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety Terry Letuli said, since the first choice was not approved by village authorities, DPS has to look elsewhere.

The first choice was the Mageo family’s land in Pago Pago called Siautapini, which was opposed by not only members of the family but also did not get an endorsement by members of the village council.

Letuli was unable to comment on whether the Government has changed its mind about moving the TCF.

“But then again, if we move the Correctional facility it will cost a lot of money to build a new prison,” he stated.

When asked whether the government is considering asking the Pago Pago families and the village to reconsider their stance, Letuli replied, “not at this time.”

The Deputy Commissioner told KHJ News, “The Government has yet to consider going back to the village, but then these decisions are up to the Governor and Commissioner whether to proceed with the plans.”
