It’s Ash Wednesday, the start of the 40 days of Lent.
Ashes from the burning of palm leaves which were blessed at last year’s Palm Sunday services were distributed and worn on the foreheads of Catholics at the daily morning Mass today.
Throughout the Lenten season devout Catholics will abstain from eating meat today and every Friday until Easter Sunday.
It’s also a time for sacrifice through community service to others and giving up on things you like the most.
Many take a vacation from Facebook and other social media platforms.
