The Department of Legal Affairs and Department of Public Safety have received reports of pyramid schemes operating in American Samoa.
These pyramid schemes are being posted on Facebook group pages. A person is promised $4,000 after paying a $500 registration fee and recruiting new members.
An announcement from the Attorney General’s Office advices the public not to participate in such schemes.
“These schemes make offers that often sound too good to be true and will end up costing you money.
“We have received reports of several people losing money from these schemes already.
“These pyramid schemes, also known as Ponzi schemes, occur where the people at the top of the pyramid receive the largest amount of money and then the money decreases down the pyramid.”
Large sums of money are offered to new participants in a short amount of time. These schemes work by recruiting new participants to fill the lowest section of the pyramid. When new recruits pay money to join the Ponzi scheme, the upper section benefits from the registration fee and regifting is accumulated within the pyramid.
Each recruit is usually required to pay a registration fee and bring in 2 other people to join. The success of these schemes depends on having new recruits. When new recruits stop joining, then the money stops flowing and the pyramid collapses.
The AG’s office warns that persons recruiting others and getting monies under pyramid schemes will be investigated for criminal fraud, a Class C felony.
