Last week it was  announced that the Fono will meet just two days a week for the remaining ten days of the current Fono session.

But  today both the House and Senate approved resolutions for a recess beginning after today’s session and reconvening on June 8.

The Senate Concurrent Resolution which was introduced by Senate President Gaoteote Palaie Tofau said the legislature continues to adhere to all mandates, advisories and restrictions provided by the government to prepare and protect the territory for a possible coronavirus outbreak.

“Many lawmakers are in the group advised to remain at home to avoid contracting and spreading the virus.  Therefore it would be prudent to recess until health officials and government deem it safe to return to full work schedules and permit people to return to school and participate in social gatherings,” states the resolution.

The House had scheduled several hearings on topical issues for this week, Including one on the increase in drug cases, the Medicaid program and the status of schools.

The Chairman of the House Education Committee Rep  Vaetasi Tuumolimoli Moliga announced today that the hearing with Director of Education Dr. Ruth Matagi Tofiga will still go ahead on Wednesday morning.
