It was based on the recommendation of the Health department and LBJ Hospital that Governor Lolo Moliga has amended some of the regulations which were issued earlier to protect the health and welfare of local residents from the measles virus.

The main change under the amendment is that the ban on all public gathering is now lifted.

Before the governor announced the new changes at a cabinet meeting in his office this morning Director of Health gave an update on the measles outbreak.

There were no suspected measles cases seen or admitted to the LBJ Hospital in the last three weeks.

Motusa reported that there are 420 children needing their first MMR shot and more than 1,000 needing their second doses.

For children of child care age, he said the coverage of that age group is at 90 percent.

Reporting on the mass vaccinations, the director said DOH is awaiting another shipment of 2000 vaccines scheduled to arrive tomorrow.

As we reported earlier, 8,000 vaccines arrived Thursday night and as of today over 3,000 are left.

The governor stressed that when schools resume all students who haven’t been vaccinated for measles must get a shot before they are allowed back in class.

He directed that a nurse be assigned to every school to make sure the children are immunized.

Lolo said people are still allowed to travel however they must abide by protective measures now in place.

The entry permits for citizens of Samoa are subject to a 15-day review while all other permits would go through a 30-day review.

Regarding the amnesty program announced under the December 8th continued public health emergency declaration,  the governor said that overstayers and their sponsors have a 30-day window to register at the Immigration Office.

The government will not take any action against them for one year giving them the opportunity to make good on their papers.

But after 30 days,  there will be full enforcement of immigration laws and all those in the territory illegally will be dealt with,
