Ten year old Guahan Aiono Te’o Martin, whose mother Ursula Fitimaleafa Teo Martin is American Samoan, carried the wreath for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during the Memorial Day ceremony yesterday at Arlington, Virginia.
Guahan carried the red, white and blue wreath made of cut outs of children’s palms and placed it on a stand which was then carried forward by the US Marines on duty.
Guahan, accompanied by a girl, is seen in one of the photos of the ceremony giving a salute alongside uniformed officers.
Representing Gold Star Families, he was chosen for this task by the non profit organization, TAPS, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, which serves families and anyone who had lost a loved one in the military.
Guahan’s father, Colonel George Anthony Martin, died when Mrs. Martin, a native of Faleniu was 8 months pregnant with him.
Col. Martin was killed in a B52 aviation accident on July 21, 2008 in Guam and was among those remembered for their ultimate sacrifice.
Ursula, who has won national and international body building events, said she and her son have made the trip to Arlington every Memorial Day weekend since Guahan was 9 months old for the annual TAPS National Seminar and Good Grief Camp.
She writes, “We come together, parents, spouses, brothers, sisters, children, battle buddies to honor our nation’s fallen heroes.”
The proud mother said she wanted to share this information with the people of American Samoa. She said Guahan was not only representing all military survivors but also the people of American Samoa.
