The public has been asked to report a new pest which was recently found in the territory, the little red fire ant.
The Department of Agriculture and Land Grant Division of the American Samoa Community College have teamed up to spread awareness of the fire ants and getting the public to report any sightings of the pest.
A documentary of how the fire ants attack people, crops and native species in Hawaii and Tahiti is now airing on KVZK-TV.
Agriculturalists tell of how the fire ants have infiltrated and destroyed their crops and attacked people of all ages with their painful sting.
Land Grant Entomologist Dr. Mark Schmaedick said the ants have been discovered in Tafeta and they are hoping to stop its spread to other parts of the island.
Hence they are asking people to report any sightings of the pest.
He says the red fire ants are very hard to control but Hawaii has had some success with a bait which they are hoping to use here as well.
