If you were calling a 699 number this morning, you would have gotten this message or a busy signal.

ASTCA land  lines in the 699 area have been down fpr several; hours this morning.

It was impossible to reach  the Emergency Operations Center, the police substation, airline offices,  while the phones were down.  Even ASTCA could not be reached.

A staffer at the EOC when asked if they don’t have a back up to their ASTCA landlines  said they were about to issue a notice when the lines came back on.

The new CEO of ASTCA, Lewis Wolman, said the outage was due to a faulty card module for the  fiber optic cable link.

Wolman said the outage was first reported at 7:50 am, and teams were dispatched to various ASTCA facilities for trouble-shooting.

After 9:00 am, the precise cause of the problem was identified: a faulty card module that controls a portion of the fiber optic cable link between Fagatogo and Tafuna.

Wolman said the card was replaced with a spare and full service was restored before 10 am.

ASTCA is taking steps to prevent future outages.

The new CEO said, “Long-planned and significant network upgrades will take place later this month and will reduce the number of similar outages in the future”.

ASTCA thanks its customers for their patience and support.
