Empty store shelves being restocked

Empty store shelves are being restocked with the arrival of the first containerized ship we’ve had in a month.

The Polynesia, operated by Polynesia Line, docked on Friday and containers were hurriedly transported to stores over the weekend.

The food shortages were caused by a delay of one of the Hamburg Sud vessels, the Cap Taputapu, which never arrived last month after it developed problems and had to be repaired.

Hamburg Sud and Polynesia Line have an agreement whereby they can transport goods for customers on each other’s vessels.

The cargo that Cap Taputapu was to bring was reloaded on to the Polynesia for its Pacific voyage which arrived here on Friday.

The shipping delay led to many food items running out or in short supply.

Everything from vegetables, fruits, milk, leading brands of soda, paper to building materials.

In some stores shoppers could only buy two cases of water.

Freezer goods were not affected except for turkey tails which had apparently run out.
