Deputy Treasurer- Revenue Ketih Gebauer has confirmed that the customs scanner at the main dock, aka M60 is not operating at this time.
He said that the scanner is down for maintenance but they hoped to get it back in service shortly.
Gebauer said scanning operations have been put on hold until the scanner is back in service.
Customs officials tell KHJ News that the problem with the scanner relates to the gas it uses and apparently the gas supplier hasn’t been paid in many months.
While the scanner is down Customs is not charging scanner fees.
It has been noticeable that since the scanning fees kicked in the cost of store goods have gone up.
There is no way of telling whether goods that are not scanned during the times that the scanner at the dock is not working, are still being marked up by some retailers.
