Amata lobbied top administration officials, including Vice-President Mike Pence, last year to lift fishing restrictions in the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, imposed by the Obama administration.
And Trump Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has formally recommended to President Trump to do just that…a decision Trump could make, soon.
But Amata wants safeguards for the future…

Amata in a prepared statement for the committee mark-up, says she’s fished all her life, that all Samoans at heart, are fishermen and have lived off the seas, undisturbed for three-thousand years.
And for bureaucrats to now “strip away our livelihood,” without local input, is “abhorrent and wrong!”
