Samoa Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi is not perturbed by news that ASTCA, a potential partner for the Tui Samoa Cable project is going full speed with the Hawaiki submarine cable, which will link Australia and New Zealand to Hawaii and mainland United States.

He said that Samoa had hoped to attract ASTCA because it’s an affordable option.

Tuilaepa said ASTCA ‘s decision to go with Hawaii cable is not of concern because the Tui Samoa Cable has already gone ahead without American Samoa.

He also said that Hawaiki Cable is more expensive than the Tui Samoa option, but if ASTCA has found funds for the Hawaiki venture then that is their prerogative.

KHJ News reported last week that the Board of Directors of the Retirement Fund has approved an investment of more than $20 million in the Hawaiki Cable.

According to company website profiles, Hawaiki Cable will offer high speed broadband at 43 terabits, which would allow users to download 1200 hi definition movies per second.

Tui Samoa Cable, which according to Tuilaepa will be operational “by the end of the month”, will only provide 8 terabits of broadband speed.

The Hawaiki Cable, like the Samoa Submarine Cable Company, which operates Tui Samoa Cable are both private ventures.
