The American Samoa Democratic Party is calling attention to the sharp increase in fuel prices and the growing impact it is having on the cost of living for families across American Samoa.

A statement from ASDP cites recent reports that the Maximum Allowable Price for fuel is $5.97, a 73% increase in just a few months since February. Gasoline prices at some local gas stations have also reportedly climbed as high as $5.49 per gallon.

For many working families, these increases are translating into major financial burdens:

  • It can now cost nearly $110 to fill up a 20-gallon truck
  • Over $137 to fill a 25-gallon truck
  • Nearly $165 to fill a $30-gallon truck

ASDP Chair Patrick Ti’a Reid stated, “Working families in American Samoa are already struggling with expensive food costs, utility bill, and airfares.  A nearly 73% jump in fuel costs affects almost every aspect of daily life ad puts even more pressure on wage earners living paycheck-to-paycheck.”

The Party noted that higher fuel costs also impact shipping, grocery prices, small businesses, fishermen , transportation workers, and electricity costs .

ASDP is encouraging local leaders to explore “common-sense solutions that can help provide relief tp residents and small businesses” including:

  • Temporary fuel tax relief measures that might help reduce prices at the pump
  • Subsidizing transportation costs to incentivize carpool or alternative transportation options
  • Increased investment in renewable energy and energy independence initiatives
  • Greater transparency and oversight regarding fuel pricing and consumer protections.
