House rejects Senate change to EITC bill, conference committee named

The House and Senate are to conference on the bill to amend the Earned Income Tax Credit law.  The House does not accept a change that the Senate made to the administration bill which states that if the funding from the federal government for the credit runs out, the American Samoa Government for payments will not be liable to pay and further benefits under this ;aw

Tax Office Manager Tagoai Vaaimamao Poufa Teo had testified that the IRS provided $18 million for each of the past two years for the EITC payments however because of the large number of local wage earners who qualified, the payments amounted to between $24 and $25 million.  ASG ended up paying the overage.

The House has rejected the Senate amendment. The House conferees picked for the conference committee are Reps Trude Ledoux-Sunia, Fetui Fetu and Vailoata Amituanai. The Senate conferees are Sens. Togiola Tulafono, Magalei Logovii and Olo Uluao Letuli.
