In news from the Fono, the House of Representatives yesterday approved the Governor’s nomination of Theodore Ted Le’iato as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Samoa Power Authority. The vote was 12-4.
Le’iato did not pass confirmation in the Senate last week.
Senators did not approve Maaelopa Bob Tuiasosopo for the Board of Directors of the LBJ Tropical Medical Center. During the confirmation vote yesterday, only 7 senators voted in support of Maaelopa while 4 opposed. Ten votes are needed for confirmation in the Senate.
Governor Pula’ali’i Nikolao Pula had first submitted Maaelopa’s nomination to the Senate for confirmation in October last year however a resolution for confirmation was never introduced. At the time Afamasaga Dr Talifa, whom Maaelopa was to replace on the Board was questioning his removal citing that his term had not expired. After the Fono ended its second regular session Governor Pula’ali’i named Maaelopa to the hospital board as a recess appointment. Maaelopa said he has been active on the LBJ Board since November of last year.
He has previously served as a member of the American Samoa Government Employees Retirement Fund.
