Closures bringing about change: Environmental Health Services Division

The Environmental Health Services Division of the Department of Health believes the closure of government facilities and private businesses for health and safety issues is bringing about change and a key factor is support by current leaders.

In a bold statement on its Facebook page, the division said that in the past unhygienic and unsanitary conditions identified during inspections were not exposed or addressed because of the involvement of influential figures.

*Leaders were afraid to lose the support from private sector or individuals. Businesses were owned by directors, house representatives, senators, etc. who did not care if you get sick or not, while they continue to get kick backs.”

It continued that leaders and inspectors of the Environmental Health Services Division were threatened, harassed, abused and bribed by leaders to not expose such findings and discrepancies.

But there’s been a wind of change. The public naming of businesses and facilities that the division closes for health and safety violations, with photos of conditions found during inspections, is getting support from the public and current leaders alike.

“For the first time compared to the past 20 years, the work and the call made for closure and exposure of such findings by our health inspectors have finally been supported by leaders who truly care for the lives, safety and well-being of our people even if the business belongs to a major supporter, a leader, a senator, a house representative, a pastor, a family member or any leader or whether the agency is headed by the current administration’s pick or not,” said the post. And it adds this is the support needed to enable them to do their job.
