Governor Pulaali’i Nikolao Pula has expressed disappointment that the House of Representatives did not confirm Brett Butler as Treasurer.
Speaking on the Talatala le Taui Show with host Taupau Tauleave Toluono, the Governor said he was saddened because Butler is one of the most qualified and experienced sons of the territory in financial matters—but has been turned down by the House.
He said that after the initial House vote for Butler he reached out to House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale and asked for his support for Butler’s confirmation. However, the second vote last week also failed.
The first House vote for Butler had 10 representatives voting in support of his nomination, while 9 voted against. The second vote was 8 in support and 10 against.
Governor Pulaali’i said the House has spoken this is part of the democratic process. He said he and Lt. Governor Pulu’s administration will move forward.
He said Butler will continue to work for the Governor’s Office and with Treasury utilizing his financial expertise. One of the projects that Butler was working on was a new tax system to replace the current system which is 30 years old and is expected to break at any time. The Governor said their administration does not want to break the law, a reference to the statute which provides that a person can only serve as acting director for 90 days. Butler was first appointed Acting Treasurer in September.
Governor Pulaalii indicated that the administration would be submitting to the Fono for confirmation members of boards and commissions, and he hopes that the House would consider the needs of the government when they vote.
The Governor thanked the Senate President and senators who unanimously voted to confirm Butler for the position of Treasurer.
