The back portion of a home in Aua village was damaged by a landslide early Friday morning.

The manager of the Road Maintenance Division of Public Works, Ite Matagia, said a crew responded; however, heavy equipment could not reach the site as there’s not enough space between the homes and graves in the front.

He said the site was still not safe as rocks and debris were still falling from the mountainside.

The Emergency Operations Center had been contacted to offer assistance and family members have moved to the homes of relatives.

Matagia said most of the calls on Friday morning were for clearing of drainage for roads in Ottoville, Faga’ima, and Malaeimi.

At 4:30 p.m. on Friday, a major landslide occurred at Failolo, which brought down huge boulders and debris that covered the road completely. ASPA lines and BlueSky cables were down, putting the end of the west side in darkness. Matagia reported that crews worked until 9 p.m. to clear the road. At 2 a.m. on Saturday, another landslide occurred at the same site. Crews were able to clear one lane of the road, but will return to the site at daylight.

Another landalide was reported on Friday from Fatumafuti around 7 p.m.
