Classes are cancelled today for all public schools and some private schools. Director of Education Maefau Dr Mary Taufetee issued an announced yesterday afternoon about the school closure and cited expected high winds, heavy rainfall and high waves in coastal areas today.

But while there’s no classes for students, all school staff and teachers have to report to their school sites from 7:30 am to 12 pm. Principals were directed to implement remote learning plans to ensure that mandated days of instruction are met.

The DOE Director asked that staff ensure classroom furniture. Equipment and other items are properly secured and make sure windows and doors are shut to prevent damage from the expected severe weather

Private schools which sent notices that they will also be closed today are all Catholic schools, Samoa Baptist Academy, South Pacific Academy, SPICC and Pacific Horizons School.

ASG also announced that the Island Wide Clean Up scheduled for today has been cancelled due to the bad weather.

The National Weather Service said this morning that winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts of up to 40 miles per hour are expected. There will also be heavy rainfall throughout the day. Wind, high surf, small craft and small stream flood advisories are in effect along with a Flash Flood Watch.

The inclement weather is due to a trough lying over the Samoan islands and will continue to tomorrow.
