The Republican Party of American Samoa strongly rejects the statement issued by the Democratic National Committee through the American Samoa Democratic Party regarding the events of January 6, 2021.

It describes the statement as “inflammatory and misleading.”

Chairman of the Republican Party of American Samoa, Taulapapa Will Sword, said of the Democratic Party statement, “Their portrayal of that day is incorrect. The so-called “insurrection” is a blatant distortion of facts, designed to divide our nation and perpetuate a partisan narrative that ignores the broader context and evidence.”

He said, “As proud Americans and Samoans, we stand for truth, fairness, and the principles of democracy, and we must not allow revisionist history to undermine the will of the people.

“First and foremost, the events of January 6 were not an organized insurrection aimed at overthrowing the government, as Democrats claim. What occurred was a chaotic protest that escalated into a riot, fueled by legitimate concerns over election irregularities and transparency in the 2020 presidential election—a problem that has since proven to be true.”

According to the RPAS, the Democratic statement’s focus on “lost lives” and “traumatized” officers is selective and hypocritical. We honor and willingly fund all law enforcement officers who serve our communities, including those who protected the Capitol that day.

“Furthermore, the criticism of President Trump’s pardons for individuals involved in the events is misguided. These pardons addressed cases where non-violent participants were subjected to overly harsh prosecutions, often in a politicized justice system that targeted conservatives while ignoring similar actions by left-wing groups during the 2020 riots.”

The statement says, “Those unrests, which caused billions in damage and numerous deaths across American cities, were downplayed by Democrats as “mostly peaceful protests.” The hypocrisy is evident: why condemn January 6 while excusing widespread violence and destruction of federal property in the name of other causes?

“President Trump’s actions on his return to office reflect a commitment to justice and reconciliation, not division. Democrats accuse Republicans of “denying the truth” and “spreading lies” about the 2020 election, yet they refuse to engage with evidence of irregularities presented in courts and state audits.

“Their narrative serves one purpose: to remove opposition and consolidate power. As we mark this unfortunate anniversary, let us move forward by focusing on the real challenges facing American Samoa and our nation: economic growth, a healthy community, border security, and protecting our Pacific interests.”
