The Samoa Police has said that the publication of drug suspects photographs and other details is a necessary measure for public protection and a critical tool for deterrence.

The Samoa Observer newspaper reported that Police in a statement clarified reasons for publicizing offenders’ information and mugshots.

“This practice is consistent with our statutory functions which mandates the Police to maintain law and order, protect life and property, and prevent, detect and investigate crimes throughout Samoa.”

Police added that the drug landscape in 2026 continues to present evolving risks to the youth, with incidents recorded among school-aged children.

“By publicizing offender information, we allow parents, guardians and educators to remain vigilant,” said the statement

This transparency is vital in identifying individuals who may pose a threat to our most vulnerable populations.

“The Samoa Police Prisons and Corrections Service remains committed to responsible and lawful communication, ensuring that all publications comply with legal requirements, including protection of minors and the integrity of ongoing court processes,” the statement said.

Police had initially published the details and picture of a 15-year-old who was arrested during a raid but the photo was later taken down as it violated the Young Offenders Act.
