Governor Pulaali’i Nikolao Pula left the territory Tuesday night (December 23), and as of now, no memo has been issued announcing who is Acting Governor.

KHJ News understands that the Governor traveled with the First Lady and did not have a police escort. He is expected to return on January 5, 2026.

While it is standard procedure for the Lt. Governor to serve as Acting Governor during the Governor’s absence, a memo is usually issued by the Governor before his departure to announce this.

However, as of December 29, there has not been any memo issued by the Governor’s Office to announce that Lt. Governor Pulumataala Ae Ae Jr. is Acting Governor. When KHJ News spoke with the Lt. Governor on Wednesday, December 24, he was also waiting for the memo.

ASG Holidays for New Year’s Day
Before his departure, the Governor issued a memo concerning the ASG holidays for News Year’s. Wednesday, December 31, will be a regular working day; however, ASG offices will close at 12 p.m. Thursday, January 1, and Friday, January 2, are designated as official ASG holidays.

Government operations shall resume under normal business hours on Monday, January 5.

“The New Year marks a time of renewal, reflection and hope as we look ahead to new opportunities and responsibilities,” said Governor Pulaali’i. “It is also a moment to give thanks for God’s guidance and blessings throughout the past year. Employees are encouraged to spend time with family and loved ones reflect on the year past and prepare for the year ahead with renewed purpose, unity, and commitment in service to our community.”

He concluded, “I extend my sincere appreciation for your continued service and dedication to the people of our territory. May the New Year bring you good health, success, and prosperity.”
