A 22-year-old man accused of a shooting in Kalihi is no longer charged with attempted murder.

Hawaii News Now reports that Tanumafili “Tano” Fotu is now charged with the lower offense of reckless endangering in the first degree.

Fotu allegedly shot a 39-year-old man on Nov. 23 near Kingsgate Plaza on North King Street, near the Dillingham Boulevard intersection.

Court documents say the victim told police that Fotu punched his son in the face multiple times, and when the victim intervened, Fotu allegedly pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest.

Emergency Medical Services treated the victim for a gunshot wound to the upper torso and took him to the hospital in serious condition.

Fotu was arrested and initially charged with second-degree attempted murder and two firearms offenses. His bail was set at $1 million.

On Nov. 28, Fotu appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to all charges. A judge revoked his bail during that hearing.
