Ground was broken Wednesday for a project that has been on the drawing board for years: the Onesosopo Park Sports Complex.

The $4.2 million project to be built by Rainbow Construction, formerly known as Happy Construction, will include a football field, bleachers, parking areas, walking trails, and new restrooms.

Parks and Recreation Director Andrew Pelesasa said in a previous interview that the stadium will have a seating capacity for 80 to 120 people, and the open-air design promotes both recreation and community gatherings. Its envisioned to be completed in 12 months.

At the ground breaking ceremony, Governor Pulaalii Nikolao Pula acknowledged the planning put in by previous administrations and thanked all those who have brought the project to fruition.

Senators and Representatives from the Eastern District have persistently pushed for play fields at Onesosopo Park, noting that their only high school does not have a football field to train. Director Pelesasa mentioned in his remarks the high school’s constant requests for a field.

He said the challenge was in securing funds for the sports complex and was thankful that federal funding has been obtained. The Land and Water Conservation Fund, is funding the project. He acknowledged all departments that have assisted in moving the project along, and thanked residents of the eastern district for their patience.

Deacon Lui Polu of the Aua Catholic Parish offered the invocation and blessed the site.
