A major egg importer has received approval from the Department of Health (DOH) to sell its egg supplies for one month after the best buy date.
The Manager of the Environmental Health Services Division, Aileen Solaita, confirmed that Tautua Mo Oe has been granted a 30-day extension to sell its eggs. She explained that the latest shipment of eggs for the wholesaler arrived two weeks ago and is being kept in cool storge. DOH conducted the egg float test to determine if the eggs are in good condition. In this test, the eggs are placed in cool water and if they are fresh, they will sink to the bottom and lay flat. TMO’s eggs passed the test.
Solaita said the eggs did not float, indicating that they are still good. Additionally, the eggs did not emit a foul smell.
She said considering that the eggs arrived just two weeks ago, are stored properly, and passed the float test, DOH has granted TMO 30 days to sell their eggs. Solaita added that they will be conducting more tests during this 30-day period, and if the eggs do not pass the float test, they cannot be sold.
Responding to complaints from businesses about losing money from the discontinuation of the 30-day extension to sell goods past their expiration or best buy dates, Solaita suggested that businesses tell suppliers to provide goods that are new or fresh—not goods that have sat in warehouses for a while.
