The Senate has unanimously approved the Governor’s nomination of Faoa Aitofele Sunia as a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Samoa Government Employees Retirement Fund.
All 16 senators present at Monday’s session voted to confirm Faoa.
At the start of the confirmation hearing—chaired by Senator Tuialuuluu Vaimili—Senator Togiola Tulafono said that he was pleased Faoa is still willing to serve the government and territory. He reminded his colleagues that they are all familiar with Faoa’s service as an attorney, on the bench, and as Lieutenant Governor. Togiola added that the territory had invested funds to educate individuals like Faoa, who have become leaders in American Samoa. He didn’t think there was any reason to question Faoa, as he is well known to them, and with that, moved to excuse him.
The hearing lasted only five minutes.
In his opening remarks, Faoa said he was prepared to serve as a member of the board if confirmed by the Fono. He noted that the Governor has nominated him because of his prior service on the board.
Before being excused from the hearing, Faoa thanked the senators for their confidence in him. He said he has observed the Senate sessions and their deliberations and was impressed with their diligence.
