More than 150 people gathered this past Saturday, August 23, for the Texas Flood Benefit Concert at Sadie’s by the Sea, a community-driven event aimed at supporting disaster relief for those affected by the devastating July 4 floods in Central Texas.
The concert, held from 5 to 9 p.m., featured a lineup of local talent including Ulale Ulale, Bernard Scanlan, and Angie Afo & The Vibe, and Brenda Sautia and Rex Moea’i, whose soulful performance anchored the evening. Mary Anderson made a surprise appearance, serenading the crowd with classic Samoan favorites. One of the most memorable moments came when Miss American Samoa Tofoipupu Unutoa performed a siva, prompting the audience to join in and shower her with donations for the relief fund. Emceed by Pauga Joey Cummings, General Manager of South Seas Broadcasting, the event also featured a hula from Back on Track’s Mona and Chris.
Members of the Rotary Club of Pago Pago ran a raffle featuring fine spirits and two one-night stays donated by Sadie’s by the Sea. The weather cooperated beautifully, and the atmosphere was relaxed but purposeful. The event raised $1,176 in direct donations, with additional pledges expected before funds are wired to the Rotary District 5840 Disaster Relief Fund in Texas. That district, which includes Kerrville and surrounding communities, was hit hard when the Guadalupe River surged over 30 feet, claiming 138 lives and displacing thousands.
Organized in partnership with South Seas Broadcasting (93KHJ), Sadie’s by the Sea, and the musicians and entertainers of American Samoa, the concert was a reminder that compassion doesn’t require proximity. Rotary clubs in Texas have already sent messages of thanks, acknowledging the heartfelt support from across the Pacific.
“We are all part of a global village. It wasn’t just about raising money—it was about showing up,” said Cummings. “And American Samoa showed up.”
