Tafuna Elementary School is closed today under a directive from the Department of Health (DOH) due to unsanitary conditions discovered during an inspection last week.
An announcement from Director of Education Maefau Dr. Mary Taufetee stated that the closure is necessary, based on the department’s expertise, to ensure a healthy and safe environment for everyone.
As reported last week, the Environmental Division of DOH had posted closed signs on the main gate of the school and several school buildings after its inspection last Tuesday. However, the school remained open throughout last week.
Acting Principal Daniel Fuimaono said that classes held in eight classrooms, which DOH recommended should be closed, have been moved to other classrooms. However, Aileen Solaita, the head of the Environmental Health Division, told KHJ News that their recommendation was for the entire school to be closed until all buildings have been cleaned.
An inspection report noted several issues, including rat feces found under cabinets and in corners, a buildup of dust on windows and louvers, mold and green algae growing inside classrooms, unsanitary conditions in all water fountains, and ceiling leaks.
The DOE director stated that all school leaders, teachers, and staff are required to report to the school to prepare assignments to be sent virtually or for pick-up, as well as to continue cleaning and sanitizing their designated areas and school grounds.
Tuala-uta representatives Larry Sanitoa and Ben Sauvao visited the school last week and received an update on the cleaning and sanitizing efforts being carried out by Island Safety and Sanitation.
It was recommended that the school remain closed for several days to ensure the safety of both children and staff due to the cleaning chemicals being used and ongoing repair work.
The DOE director said it is anticipated that the school will reopen for regular instruction tomorrow, April 8. However, this is contingent upon guidance from the Department of Health.
She added that the DOE will monitor the situation closely and provide further updates if there are any changes to the reopening schedule.
