Power crisis continues in Samoa

Samoa continues to grapple with power outages that has crippled businesses and thrown education off course over the last month.

The county’s sole electricity provider, the government owned Electric Power Corporation earlier this week introduced a schedule for power cuts for the whole of Upolu island with a warning to consumers to expect outages for a while.

Savaii island does not have the same problem with all generators running smoothly after a few days of cuts earlier this month.

Meanwhile, people have been trying to get answers from government on the outages, but nothing has been forthcoming.

The Minister responsible for EPC Olo Fiti Va’ai has been in Fiji on aviation matters and management has been silent on the generator breakdowns.

Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa has just returned from attending a Commonwealth meeting in London and remains equally silent on the blackouts.

Speculation has been circulating on the problem but in the meantime businesses have been very vocal on losing business and profits.

Samoa Observer reports some shops have resorted to buying generators to keep operating.
