American Samoa’s name went on the medal tally for the 2023 Pacific Games, last night, thanks to Olympian swimmer Micah Masei’s stellar performance in the Men’s 50 meter breast stroke.

He won Team ASA’s first medal, a silver, placing second in the finals with a time of 29.48.

The gold medal winner from the Federated States of Micronesia, Tasi Limtiaco, finished the race in 29.17. In the preliminary heats, Micah had the fastest time of all the swimmers: 29.26 compared to FSM’S time of 29.37.

Before he departed for the Solomon Islands, Micah said his connection to American Samoa is through his grandfather who left American Samoa and his village of Fagaalu when he was 18.  Micah said he is following in the footsteps of his mother who swam in college, but it’s a sport he didn’t initially like.
