The Department of Port Administration is overseeing an important project to resurface and rehabilitate the asphalt pavement on its primary runway at Pago Pago International Airport.

The project includes the replacement of 4-6 inches of asphalt, along 7,000 feet of the 10,000 foot runway. 3,000 feet of the runway was previously completed in 2018.

This project will result in over 45,000 tons of asphalt being produced and paved over the next 12 months. The project, which began last month, also includes airfield paint marking, relocation of the segmented circle and lighted wind cone to a safer location, removing redundant pavement areas to reduce long term maintenance costs, electrical works, and extension of the security perimeter road at the airport by reusing the millings from the asphalt works.

Chief Engineer at Port Administration Natalia Palamo said, “This project will help improve the long-term durability and safety of the runway.”

The construction of the project is made possible through funding provided by the Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvements Program Grant of $22.6 Million. The design for the project was completed by Woolpert Engineering Firm and the construction contract was awarded to McConnell Dowell Amerika Samoa.

Construction Monitoring Services was awarded to PIOA Consultants.

The project is expected to be completed in November 2024.

Palamo said, “Temporary closures and threshold displacements associated with the project have been carefully planned and coordinated with airlines, airport users and FAA to minimize impacts on passengers.”
