About 500 employees of the Department of Education did not get their direct deposits, or paper checks, on time this last pay period.
Director of Education Talauega, Dr. Samasoni Asaeli says the delay was due to several reasons and factors.
These include the changing of accounts to transfer all employees paid under grants over to the new fiscal year grant awards.
The director explained that ASDOE grant funds are awarded at different dates, and paperwork is processed only after awards are confirmed and received by the appropriate agencies.
Each employee has a Form 48 for their salary, which must be submitted, processed, and approved.
As of Monday, 456 of the 500 employees affected received their checks via special check runs by Treasury on Sunday and Monday.
About 44 employees are still without checks for various reasons such as, but not limited to, conversion from probationary to permanent career status, contract renewals still being processed, NTE dates, leaves, no timecards, etc. There will be another special run today and a supplemental run on Friday to run checks for these employees.
The DOE director said they’re working closely with the Budget Office, Human Resources, and Treasury to address this issue and improve their approach and procedures in transitioning from one fiscal year to the next.
