The new Representative for Manu’a District #1 Faauifono Vaitautolu took her seat in the House Chamber today, and was given a warm welcome by House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale and representatives.

This followed a brief swearing-in conducted by Chief Associate Judge Mamea Sala jr.

Relatives and friends of the veteran educator and US Army retiree were present to witness the historical moment, as Vaitautolu is the first woman from Manu’a to take up a seat in the American Samoa Fono.

Manu’a Senator Malaepule Saite Moliga says the election of Faauifono shows that while women matais are not allowed in Manu’a, their district does not limit females from attaining public office.

Vaitautolu ran against three male candidates in a special election, September 12, made necessary by the passing of Rep. faipule Alumamalu Ale Filoialii.
