Six of the 21 incumbent members of the House of Representatives have been secured seats in the next Legislature.
The official list of candidates for the congressional and House of Representatives election on November 3, released yesterday by the Election Office shows that Vailoata Eteuati Amituanai in District #7, Trude Ledoux-Sunia in District #9, Manumaua Wayne Wilson and Sauasetoa Tautoloitua Ho Ching in District #12, Fiu Johnny Saelua in District #13 and Manavaalofa Tutuila Manase in District #16 are running unopposed.
Former cabinet members and senior government employees are first time candidates. A former Director of Human Resources Lynn Pulou Alaimalo is running against Luaitaua Gene Pan in District #5, a former Director of the Environmental Protection Agency Tiapula Dr Toafa Vaiaga’e is challenging Rep. Shaun Vaa in District #3, and Deputy Director of Budget Satia Aokuso Satia is running from District #1, Manu’a where Vice Speaker Fetui Fetu and Vala Porotesano are the incumbents.
Alex Sene Jr., a former CEO of the American Samoa Telecommunications Authority is making a second bid for one of the two seats for Tuala-uta, currently held by Fagaima Larry Sanitoa and Ben Vaomu Sauvao. A former nominee for Director of Parks and Recreation Tapusalaia Tap Maneafaiga is also a candidate in the Tuala-uta election along with Sefulu Mika Kelemete.
Victims advocate and founder of Back on Track, Mona Uli is challenging House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale for the Alataua seat.
Apart from the six who are running unopposed, all incumbent House members are seeking re-election. The Swains island faipule is selected by consensus at a meeting of descendants of Swains Island.
The six candidates certified for the congressional race are Aumua Amata, Fualaau Rosie Tago Lancaster, Meleagi Suitonu Chapman, Samana Semo Veavea, Sandra King-Young and Tuifagaloa Dr Afu Lefaoseu.
