Governor urges conservation in wake of rising fuel prices

Governor Pula’ali’i Nikolao Pula is urging conservation as fuel prices go up as a result of the conflict in the Middle East.

Speaking on 93 KHJ’s Morning Show last week the Governor said that a Task Force is looking at ways for the government to reduce spending in the wake of the rising fuel costs.

In the same vein, Acting Treasurer Carrie-Lee Magalei-Tulafono issued a reminder to ASG directors before the Easter weekend that with the long weekend and Flag Day approaching that they reinforce energy conservation across all departments.

She urged that they non essential lights, AC, office equipment and powered items be turned off when offices are closed or at reduced capacity.

The Acting Treasurer said in this time of high fuel costs and fiscal challenges, “your leadership saves ASG significant dollars.”

Last week the Governor ordered a temporary freeze on spending of local funds, effective April 1st up to April 10th. During the freeze no local fund spending of any kind is permitted except for payroll and overtime for first responders.

There will also be no approvals for travel. And no personnel transactions will be allowed.

The Governor said this was due to a significant backlog of outstanding payments and the freeze is intended to strengthen ASG’s financial position.
