The House of Representatives has approved the Governor’s five nominees to the Board of Higher Education which oversees the American Samoa Community College.
There were no questions asked of the nominees during a confirmation hearing Monday morning by the House Education and Scholarships Committee chaired by Rep. Fiu Johnny Saelua.
Rep. Vailoata Amituanai said that all five were long serving employees of the American Samoa Government with distinguished qualifications and experience.
Dr. Oreta Mapu Critchon and Dr. Lina Galeai-Scanlan were confirmed by a vote of 17-1, Brigette Moala and Loata Sipili were approved by a vote of 16-1, and Sesula Fepuleai McMoore Tufele received 15 yes votes and 3 nay votes. The difference in the total number of representatives voting is because three members arrived after the voting for Moala and Sipili.
The Senate has already approved the five nominees, so they are now cleared to serve on the Board of Higher Education.
In the Senate, a resolution for the confirmation of seven members of the Board of Directors of the Feleti Barstow Public Library was introduced Monday morning.
Senate President Pro Tem Senator Magalei Logovii after assigning the resolution to the Education Committee chaired by Senator Tuialuulu Vaimili recommended that the committee wait until the next legislative session to hold a confirmation hearing for these nominees. He said that there are not enough days left and there won’t be any harm to the government if they delay the vote until they return for the new session.
The House of Representatives has already approved the seven nominees: Lance J. Glodwski, Fa’ailoa Seui Afalava, Dr. Ernest Tamafili Seiuli, Dr. Salote Aoelua-Fanene, Lancelot Te’i, David Edison, and Aitofi Lomu.
