A few hours after the new playground at Lions Park was officially opened Tuesday, families turned out to enjoy what has been under construction behind the walls.

And they were not disappointed. The playground features a multi level climbing structure with slides, ramps, ladders and crawl through elements. It also includes a small swing set, monkey bars and the return of the older red playground equipment which has been repainted and reinstalled to add even more play options.

One parent said his kids played for more than an hour before they finally had to be dragged home, adding that the lagoon side setting makes the playground feel special for families. There was a steady stream families stopping by to check out the new playground.

The project which started in June of last year cost more than $300,000 and was funded by the Land and Water Conservation Fund under the National Park Service. The contractor was Vailu’u and Sons.

The Department of Parks and Recreation hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday morning to officially open the new playground.
