The Member of Parliament for Vaimauga 3, Taioaliiseu Fiti Aimaasu has resigned from Parliament after leaving the Human Rights Protection Party.
He has announced he will run under the banner of the Faatuatua I le Atua Samoa ua Tasi Party in a bi-election, triggered by his resignation.
“This decision was not made lightly, nor was it driven by anger, bitterness, or disrespect,” Taioaliiseu told Talamua Media.
He said he remains grateful to HRPP, its leadership and its supporters for the opportunities and relationships formed over many years.
Taioali’iseu described the decision as the most difficult of his political life and one made after months of extensive consultations across the district, deep personal reflection, prayer and discussions with his family.
He confirmed that feedback gathered during visits throughout Vaimauga 3 demonstrated strong support for the current FAST Government.
He stated that recent internal HRPP party developments including a request for him to step down from leadership responsibilities within the Fonofa’avae, is a contributing factor to his decision to resign.
“The pressure raised serious concerns about my ability to continue advocating effectively for the people of Vaimauga 3,” he said.
He said the only honorable course of action was to return the mandate to the people.
“In a democracy, leadership must rest on the confidence of the majority,” he said.
“Returning to the people is not a sign of weakness, but of respect for democracy and for the voice of the electorate.”
